5 out of 5 stars Finally, the 32 for me   December 18, 2008
Darryl Roberson (Dallas, Texas)
I love this set! I'd wanted a complete collection of the 32 for some time now, and after sampling several sets, this one is the one I found most consistently satisfying. As stated below, Gulda has chops and then some, and the recordings are great. Unfortunately, I think he went over the top with the tempi in the opus 53, and I disliked most of the opus 57. But I was mostly interested in the unnamed sonatas, and except for these few instances, Gulda's superlative technique has been captured in the most exciting and musical renderings of these 32 masterpieces. Top recommendation.

3 out of 5 stars Perfect and superior technical performance   July 30, 2008

This CD set contains, as implied, all of Beethoven's piano sonatas. Of course all matters of music and arts are based on individual and subjective experiences, and is therefore always a matter of personal taste. I love Beethoven's piano sonatas (along with his symphonies and string quartets)it is a music filled with such a huge span of different moods, impressions, styles and musical expressions beyond the wildest dreams. When listening to these performances, I get the impression that this is a performer with outstanding virtuoso skills, but for me it doesn't bring the 'story' in the music. I personally prefer Brendels performances (the ones from seventies), where one just finds so much more depth, vision plus musical and human expression. Maybe Gulda has a superior technique and an exceptional clarity in his playing here, but where is "the magic". Of other pianists I have heard and that I can recommend Pollini is absolutely a brilliant choice. And haven't heard him perform all of the sonatas, but what I've heard so far is great. No doubt that Gulda is a fantastic pianist, but I just personally prefer a different approach.

5 out of 5 stars Gulda, the genius.   July 24, 2008

First, I apologize if my english sounds a bit strange to your ears but I'm just a poor french Beethoven's music lover.
Friedrich Gulda is simply amazing. His 1967 readings of the sonatas are perfectly balanced between the 18th and 19th century, he makes us feel how this music is either modern, romantic and deeply baroque. By choosing quick tempi and with an utmost sense of rythm, Gulda is always right; the entire cycle takes your soul and you just want to listen to it again. For sure, you must listen to other cycles to make your own culture but Gulda is a must. The Appassionata is my favorite sonata; in this opus 57, Gulda's playing is fantastic, makes you dance, cry and dance again; the Andante con moto sounds like a spiritual to my ears, with a deeply-hearted swing.
Friedrich Gulda left us eight years ago, I miss his mind, his love for man and music. His vision of the 32 sonatas is glorious; listen to it again and again; it makes life better, simply better.

5 out of 5 stars Gulda Guides the God (Of Composition On The Piano)   December 7, 2007

Wether you are into rock, or into genuine repetoire classic music: Gulda is your man. Wether you are into compositional skills, or into contrapunctal funk: Beethoven is your man.

About Gulda:
Gulda shows that Beethoven still stands for modernism: played with plenty bravoura, played with humor, played with skills. Gulda takes you by the hand showing the musical world of the 18th century. Different from any other performer, more color, instict and more bone.
More discussed too.... Gulda plays a modern Beethoven, even if it was 40 years ago. Gulda colors the sonatas, and makes them stand out any other interpretation. Even the early Ludies are wunderful: rythmic, and full of humor.

About Beethoven:
No discussion: Beethoven has paramount power in piano literature. From his Bagatelles to his major sonatas. To read/play/hear all the sonatas is hard work!! But very revealing: war, peace, love, hate, heaven and hell. Desperation in later sonatas. Take one CD, listen to one Sonata. Take your time, let Beethoven get you. You will be rewarded.

Gulda's playing is highly accesible. Gulda is great for (first) guiding hand into Beethoven, and even/also for the more experienced listener a very strong performer. Sound quality is great: all together super-best value.

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT!   January 21, 2007

Read all the reviews and weigh and evaluate them. Then, just buy it. This is one of the great recordings of the 20th Century and Beethoven fans should not be without it. Others like Solomon (especially) and Brendel, Kempff, et al have their merits and may be better on some specific sonatas, but the Gulda complete set has too much to offer to be discounted in any way. The low price only adds to their appeal. I owned these on vinyl years ago and am so glad to see them so well transfered to CD.
