4 out of 5 stars Los Dorados & Cuong Vu - Funky Sh#$   October 6, 2008

Unlike an earlier reviewer, I am familiar with the other output of Mexican prog/jazz group Los Dorados. This new album fits neatly in their sphere. But the addition of Cuong Vu on trumpet for this album means that there is quite a bit more harmonic color in the melodies. Vu and saxophonist Daniel Zlotnick really play up the tension and release of dissonance and resolution. As on the last album, guitarist Demian Galvez (Ely Guerra's band) probably contributes the hippest tunes, but the whole band writes well. These guys are a group to watch, and this album will probably be enjoyed by people who also liked Martin, Medeski, & Wood, Zony Mash, the more commercial side of John Zorn, etc. The tunes are catchy enough to also appeal to most Pat Metheny Group fans.

If you dig Cuong Vu, grab this. There is apparently no CD version, at least none I can find. I have no idea what Los Dorados--Mexican jazz rockers I'd never heard of before running across this record on iTunes--sound like without Vu's trumpet, but with it they're tearing the place up on what is essentially a Vu record. He sounds more like the leader than a guest here, and most of the writing recalls the Vu I know from Pure and Come Play With Me--that beautifully lyrical blend of jazz, rock and electronica. Superb recording quality too, at least on the iTunes Plus.
