Executive Team
The Avenue5 executive team is a group of highly experienced professionals with a hands-on approach to managing properties, a track record of success, and a commitment to safeguarding clients’ investments. Walt Smith
Chief Executive Officer
Active in the property management industry since 1986, Walt was one of the three founding principals of HSC Real Estate, serving as its president from 2001 until it was acquired by Riverstone Residential Group in 2008. At the time of the Riverstone transaction, HSC provided property management and ancillary services for more than 34,000 apartment homes in California and the Pacific Northwest. Walt became CEO of Riverstone in 2009 and provided strategic vision and leadership for its portfolio of more than 800 managed properties and 4,500 associates. During his four-year tenure, Walt fostered a vibrant and collaborative company culture, significantly expanded the ancillary services platform, and drove substantial income and unit growth that ranked Riverstone as the second largest management company in the United States. In 2014, Walt and the legacy HSC partners formed Avenue5 Residential to manage their 7,000 unit Investors Capital Group portfolio in the Western United States. Avenue5 Residential, a solutions-based portfolio management services company, commenced nationwide third-party management services for the multifamily industry in November 2015.

Steve Davis
Chief Operations Officer
Steve has been in the real estate industry since 1996. He formerly served as president of the Western division for Riverstone Residential Group, encompassing nearly 85,000 apartment units. Under Steve’s leadership, Riverstone’s Western division emerged into several new markets including Nevada, Utah and New Mexico and dramatically increased the portfolio size under management in both Arizona and Southern California. In addition to increasing the management portfolio, Steve was also instrumental in creating efficiencies in the overall organizational structure through better load management and a sharper focus on training, resource allocation, and improved operational performance. These efforts combined to improve the Western Division’s financial performance between 15%-20% during his tenure. Prior to Riverstone, Steve was a principal of HSC, where he ran several regional offices and was instrumental in the growth of HSC’s portfolio.

Pål Ottesen
Chief Financial Officer
Pål, who oversees Avenue5’s corporate accounting, client accounting, and treasury teams, has been active in the real estate industry since 1991. Prior to joining Avenue5, he served as CFO of Riverstone Residential Group, overseeing the financial operations of the company, property accounting group, and information technology services, support and training. During his tenure at Riverstone, he reorganized and streamlined the financial reporting, treasury, information technology, and property accounting teams in order to create efficiencies and reduce operating costs. Prior to joining Riverstone, Pål was a Principal of HSC, where among other duties he was responsible for opening the Portland office and handling all company operations.

MarySusan Wanich
Chief Administrative Officer
Marysusan, who serves as the operations liaison for Avenue5’s Northeast/Mid-Atlantic properties and executes the company’s strategic initiatives, has worked in the real estate industry since 1978. She has experience in generating performance strategies for conventional, affordable, lease-up, stabilized, and student housing assets, and in managing client relations, education, quality assurance, compliance, brokerage operations, business integrations, maintenance and construction, and ancillary revenue program implementations for multifamily firms. Prior to joining Avenue5, Marysusan held roles including managing director of integrations at Greystar, and chief operating officer and division president at Riverstone Residential Group. She holds brokers licenses in 10 states as well as the District of Columbia.

Kate Sibbern
Chief Marketing Officer
Kate, who began her multifamily career in 1993, oversees Avenue5’s global visibility strategy, including the company’s vision, brand identity, employee and client communications, digital marketing and social media, marketing automation, public and media relations, advertising, corporate events, and philanthropy programs. Prior to joining Avenue5, she served as managing director of corporate marketing at Greystar, chief marketing officer at Riverstone Residential Group, and national marketing and training director at BlackRock. As a National Association of Securities Dealers registered representative, Kate also served as director of client relations at BlackRock and marketed and raised money for the company’s real estate investment funds. She holds extensive expertise in organizational strategy and messaging, corporate and property brand identity, media and investor relations, business development, and property positioning.

Laurie Brashear
Chief Human Resources and Diversity Officer
Laurie leads all human resources operations and initiatives, including associate recruitment and retention, benefits, compensation, and career development programs. A human resources executive since 1992, Laurie previously worked for Riverstone Residential Group as well as for Stream, a 15,000-employee contact center outsourcing company. In addition, she formerly served as director of global human resources for Software Spectrum, and held significant international and domestic responsibilities at the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) and Mary Kay, Inc.

Mel Barks
Chief Performance Officer
Mel, who has worked in the real estate industry since 1990, oversees business intelligence projects, key performance indicators, cross-functional initiatives, and strategies to streamline workloads and create efficiencies. Prior to joining Avenue5, Mel served as chief performance officer at Riverstone Residential Group, where she oversaw corporate and community analytics, property transitions, and customer satisfaction initiatives for clients, residents, and associates. She also held roles at CAS Partners as well as several UK third-party real estate firms, with responsibilities including property accounting and integration of acquired businesses into standardized accounting environments.

Richard London
Chief Legal Officer
Richard began his legal career in 2001. He possesses expertise in advising on corporate governance and strategic matters, managing contract and operational policies and processes, ensuring corporate compliance with applicable United States laws, negotiating agreements, handling government inquiries, evaluating insurance coverages, developing document retention policies, crafting contract templates, training associates on legal matters, and overseeing complex transactions involving in- and out-of-court restructurings, sales of assets and equity, multiple tranches of financing, and varying forms of consideration. Prior to joining Avenue5, he held roles at Greystar, Perkins Coie LLP, and Vinson and Elkins.

Jeff Krohn
Executive Vice President, Client Strategy
John Donahoe is President & CEO of NIKE, Inc. He is responsible for the continued growth of NIKE’s global business portfolio, which includes the Nike, Jordan and Converse brands. John became president and CEO of NIKE in January 2020 and has served on the Board of Directors since 2014. Previously, he was the president and CEO of ServiceNow and of eBay Inc., and he continues to serve as chairman of the board at PayPal. Earlier in his career, he worked for Bain & Company for nearly two decades, becoming the firm’s president and CEO in 1999.

Lynn Owen
Executive Vice President, Client Strategy
Lynn oversees Avenue5’s client strategy group, which includes business development and portfolio services, and has worked in the real estate industry since 1986. She holds expertise in multifamily and commercial property management, asset management, and construction management in markets throughout the United States, both from the investor side as well as the third-party property management side of the multifamily industry. Lynn possesses extensive experience in recommending business optimization initiatives that drive portfolio and revenue growth for multifamily owners, conducting due diligence, overseeing comprehensive underwriting and acquisition processes, and assisting multifamily investors in evaluating investment opportunities relative to their specific goals. She has worked closely alongside some of the top names in real estate, assisting institutional money, pension funds, and private equity groups in analyzing, underwriting, managing, and developing strategies for multifamily investments. Prior to joining Avenue5, Lynn held leadership roles at Compass Acquisition Partners and TruAmerica Multifamily, among other prominent firms. She has also served on the board of directors for the Washington Multi-Family Housing Association, and is an active fundraiser for charitable causes that assist in ending homelessness.

Lisa Ellis
Division President, West Coast
Lisa, who has been active in the multifamily industry since 1990, oversees portfolio operations for the West Coast, which includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Northern Nevada, and California. Prior to joining Avenue5, she oversaw Greystar’s national client services platform and served as executive vice president at Riverstone Residential Group, vice president at BlackRock, director of asset management at Security Properties Incorporated, and vice president at Trammell Crow Residential Services. She holds expertise in business strategy, acquisition underwriting and analysis, new development pre-construction planning, financial performance underwriting, asset repositioning, capital budget preparation functions, new development marketing and planning, business development, associate training, property operations and performance, and all facets of asset strategy formulation. Lisa holds a broker’s license in the state of Washington.

Lesa LaRocca
Division President, Southwest and Central
Lesa, who has been active in the multifamily industry since 1987, oversees portfolio operations for southern Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Texas. Her experience covers a diverse portfolio of assets, including lease-up communities and repositioned assets. Lesa previously served as senior director of real estate at Greystar, senior vice president at Riverstone Residential Group and regional vice president for Weidner Investments. Additionally, Lesa acted as managing partner for Trillium Residential, where she directed the overall operations of roughly 8,000 units in new and acquired properties. She has served on the board of directors for the Arizona Multifamily Association since 2005, and served as the chairwoman of the board for the organization in 2011. She currently sits on the board’s executive committee. Lesa holds an Arizona real estate broker’s license, and is Avenue5’s designated broker in Arizona.

Catherine Jacobson
Executive Vice President, Property Marketing

Kohl Eisenhour
Executive Vice President, Operations

Mark Stringer
Executive Vice President, Optimization and Supplier Management Services
Mark, who has been active in the multifamily industry since 1992, oversees Avenue5’s revenue-enhancing ancillary services for property owners. He holds expertise in developing and overseeing online leasing and e-signature document processing, applicant credit and background screening, cloud storage, post-tenancy billing and collection, and renters insurance programs as a licensed property and casualty broker. Prior to joining Avenue5, Mark was responsible for business development, product implementation, and compliance as a Greystar managing director, and served as executive vice president of ancillary business services and product development at Riverstone Residential Group.
